A coup attempt against Burkina Faso’s military rulers has been foiled by the country’s intelligence and security services, according to authorities.
The military government released a statement, confirming that army officers and others had planned to seize power and disrupt the country.
Spokesperson for the ruling military, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, stated, “Officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilisation have been arrested and others are actively sought,” without providing specific details.
The coup attempt occurred on Tuesday, and the military government expressed its commitment to shed light on the plot.
They also expressed regret that officers, whose oath is to defend their homeland, were involved in such an endeavor.
Burkina Faso’s military prosecutor announced that four people had been arrested, and two others were on the run. An investigation has been launched based on credible allegations of a plot against state security involving officers.
This incident follows a previous military coup in September 2022, where Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power eight months after another coup had overthrown the democratically elected President Roch Marc Kabore.
The capital city, Ouagadougou, remained calm following the military’s announcement of the thwarted coup.
Burkina Faso has faced instability as armed groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS have launched a rebellion in the region, causing unrest in the country and neighboring West African nations.
The military has taken control amid public discontent, leading to a growing number of West African countries with military rule.
