Why we increase in house committees to 134 – Reps
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has shed light on the decision to expand the number of standing committees in the House from 109 to 134, citing the need for enhanced efficiency.
During an interaction with journalists covering the House on Tuesday, Abbas emphasized the importance of each committee actively fulfilling its responsibilities.
He also mentioned the creation of a dedicated committee tasked with ensuring that the House’s legislative agenda is diligently pursued.
He stated, “Previously, not all committees were fully operational due to various reasons. This time, we intend to ensure that every standing committee effectively carries out its responsibilities. Each committee must contribute to the improvement of Nigeria.”
Abbas further clarified that the committee on Tertiary Education underwent subdivision into multiple committees because of its oversight of a large number of agencies.
For instance, he highlighted that the previous committee on Tertiary Education had the responsibility of overseeing over 300 agencies, making it impossible to comprehensively cover all of them within a single year.
