Rema makes history, wins ‘best afrobeat’ category at MTV’s VMA
Nigerian music sensation Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema has claimed the coveted ‘Best Afrobeat’ award at the annual MTV Video Music Awards.
Rema secured this win at the MTV Video Music Awards, which took place in Newark, New Jersey, United States of America, on Tuesday.
This historic win marks the first time an Afrobeat artist has clinched this prestigious accolade.
Rema’s chart-topping hit ‘Calm Down,’ featuring the acclaimed American singer Selena Gomez, was nominated in three distinct award categories: ‘Best Song,’ ‘Best Collaboration,’ and ‘Best Afrobeat.’
Despite fierce competition from other Afrobeat luminaries like Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido feat Musa Key’s ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ Wizkid feat Ayrra Starr’s ‘2 Sugar,’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Bandana’, Rema emerged victorious in the Afrobeat category.
The remix of ‘Calm Down’ with Selena Gomez has stood out as one of Rema’s most successful collaborations to date, dominating music charts both at home and abroad.
Recently, the song reached a remarkable milestone, amassing a staggering 1 billion streams on Spotify.
Furthermore, it has retained its top position on Billboard’s US Afrobeat Songs chart for an astonishing 54 consecutive weeks, solidifying its status as the longest-running number #1 hit in the genre.
Rema’s groundbreaking win not only celebrates his outstanding musical achievements but also elevates Afrobeat music to a new level of recognition and appreciation on the global stage.
