EndSARSMemorial: Attackers of peaceful protesters still roaming free, Saraki fumes
A former President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, has raised concerns that the hoodlums who hijacked and attacked peaceful protesters during last year’s EndSARS protests are still roaming free.
Saraki aired his concerns in a lengthy message released on his Twitter handle as Nigerians mark one year of the unsolved killings of peaceful protesters by security operatives wearing army uniforms at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.
Joining Nigerian on the first anniversary of 20/10/20, Saraki said that he has “struggled with coming to terms with the sobering events of that day.”
“It is worrying that despite the acceptance of the “5 for 5 Demands,” nothing has really been done to resolve the issues that caused the protests in the first place.
“Furthermore, none of the perpetrators of the attacks on Nigerians exercising their rights to peaceful assembly have been arrested or prosecuted, despite many of them being identified.”
While security has been beefed up by the Lagos State Police COmmand ahead of a planned peaceful protest to mark the anniversary, Saraki added that “It is my sincere hope that common sense will prevail and the young people who seek to hold events to mark the first anniversary of the events at Lekki Toll Gate will be allowed to peacefully gather and be protected from any forms of violence.
“My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives, loved ones, and sustained injuries or other losses.”
