Fire guts Andorra Stadium 24-hours before England’s W/C qualifier
The Estadi Nacional Stadium playing host to England’s World Cup Qualifier away to Andorra on Saturday was gutted by fire on Friday.
Footage of the fire at the Stadium’s dugout was aired live on Sky Sports News as reports suggested that welders could be at fault.
According to TalkSPORT, the fire engulfed the television gantry – which is set to broadcast the match around the world – at the side of the 3,300-seater stadium in the Pyrenees.
UK Metro reports that Journalist Rob Dorsett was doing a piece to camera discussing Gareth Southgate’s team selection for tomorrow night’s match before realising the fire was developing next to him.
As of press time, there was no casualty of body harm recorded by anyone at the scene though the extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
Tomorrow’s match between the Three Lions and the Andorran national team remains unclear, though the fire has been reportedly put out by the local fire service.
England’s entire 24-man squad trained at the stadium on Friday morning before the fire incident.
Pictures from the stadium have shown extensive damage to the touchline, as well as a scorched portion of the pitch.
One of the VAR monitors also appears to have been destroyed, and the side of one of the dugouts appears to have melted.
The Football Association is now trying to ascertain if there is any impact on Saturday evening’s qualifier.
