Published

Senegal duo, Sadio Mane and Edouard Mendy, and Cameroon skipper, Vincent Aboubakar, have claimed the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations’ top gongs on Sunday night.

The 33rd edition of the tournament wrapped up Paul Biya Stadium, Olembé after a thrilling goalless draw in 120 minutes forced the game into penalties.

Mane won a penalty early in the game but the Liverpool man was stopped by the outstanding Abou Gabal who denied the advances of the Teranga Lions as the Pharaoh’s rarely threatened Mendy.

However, Mane moved from villain to hero when he had a second opportunity in the shootout and this time, he beat Gabaski to give Senegal a 4-2 win over seven-time champions Egypt.

After 15 previous failed attempts to win the continental gong, the Senegalese lifted their first-ever AFCON trophy on Saturday at their 16th try.

Mane won the 2021 AFCON Best Player award.

“Sadio Mané is crowned TotalEnergies Man of the Competition after his over-the-top performance with the Lions of Teranga,” CAF wrote on Twitter.

Described as “The brick wall” by CAF, Mendy was named the Best Goalkeeper of the 2021 AFCON.

Cameroon skipper, Vincent Aboubakar wins Golden Boot after netting eight goals in seven matches and leading the Indomitable Lions to a third-place finish.

Meanwhile, Zamalek and Egypt goalkeeper, Mohamed Abou Gabal aka Gabaski won the AFCON Final Man of The Match for his outstanding performance.

Three clean sheets, about 15 saves and five penalty saves in four games in the tournament.
