A 35-year-old mechanic, Shamsu Ismail, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly cheating housewife of N72, 000.
The police charged Ismail who resides in Phase III of Gwagwalada, FCT, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The prosecution counsel, Abudulahi Tanko, told the court that the matter was reported at the police station by Yusuf Lawal on January 12.
Tanko said that the complainant’s mother Fatima, in November 2021, entrusted her with three Bajaj Motorcycle worth N500, 000 to the defendant for commercial purpose.
He said that the defendant and Fatima agreed on N5, 500 weekly remittance for each of the motorcycles.
He said that the defendant since then has not remitted any money and every effort to retrieve the motorcycle failed.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 311 and 320 of the Penal Code.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Oladunmoye Olatunji admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Olatunji ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must have verifiable addresses.
He adjourned the case until March 31 for hearing.
