COVID-19: WBC trilogy postponed after Fury, 10 gym members test positive
The trilogy WBC heavyweight fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder has been postponed until October after the Gypsy King tested positive for COVID-19, according to CBS.
Reports in the US revealed that the Fury’s camp was hit with the outbreak with around with ESPN confirming that the British boxer himself contracted the virus.
The Athletic reported on Friday morning that “at least 10” people in Fury’s Vegas gym have been infected with Covid-19, thereby causing a delay to the trilogy fight for Fury’s WBC heavyweight championship was set for July 24 in Las Vegas.
An official told Lance Pugmire of The Athletic that Fury is “sick, but not that sick,” but all are “realistic about what this virus can potentially do.”
Top Rank, Fury’s US-based promoter, said in a statement: “We continue to monitor the health status of Tyson and his team and the status of the event has not changed to date.”
Recall that Wilder crashed the party for Fury who was originally set for a summer showdown with Joshua in a rare unification of all four recognized world titles by securing a trilogy fight with Fury through an arbitrator’s ruling.
Their first fight ended in a draw in December 2018 but Fury demolished Wilder in the rematch with a February 2020 knockout win in the rematch.
There was a clause in the second fight that guaranteed the loser a rematch with the short side of a 60/40 purse split.
However, Sky Sports, quoting promoter, Eddie Hearn, reported that Dillian Whyte would be available and willing to replace Fury and fight Wilder on July 24.
