250 of Nigeria’s 350 ethnic groups are resident in north – Olawepo-Hashim
A former presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, on Tuesday revealed that 250 of the nation’s 350 ethnic groups are resident in the North.
Olawepo-Hashim made the statement when he was paid a courtesy visit by the Coalition of Northern Groups in Abuja.
While praising the coalition for its contribution to the North’s rich values of integrity, the human rights activist emphasised that the country’s unity is a reflection of the region.
“They (CNC) are important because out of the 350 ethnic groups we have in Nigeria, 250 of these ethnic groups are in northern Nigeria.
“If we can have unity and security in the north, definitely we will have unity and security in the whole of Nigeria.
“And one important thing about the north is that it is a region that has a lot of values, values of integrity which is highly appreciated in Northern Nigeria.
“We have a reservoir of culture and values. I’m very glad that you came, we are all for one United Nigeria, indivisible United and secured and a northern Nigeria where we will say bye, bye to poverty.”
In his address, CNC spokesperson, Suleiman Abdulaziz, disclosed that Nigeria is being held down by leaders who have lost touch with modern realities.
According to the PUNCH, the coalition demanded the freedom of Nigeria from chaos amid ongoing security threats posed by kidnappings, terrorism, banditry and ethnic clashes, amongst others.
“We want a Nigeria free from chaos. Sadly, we have leaders who have been there since independence. These leaders have lost focus as it were, they have lost direction, we are certain they cannot lead us into the new world order.
“We assure all of us here that we are prepared to go ahead with any project that will bring about new thinking in Nigeria. A complete paradigm shift from the old order to a new system that will create progress in Nigeria.”
