Nigeria’s golden lady of sports in 2017, wrestler Odunayo Adekuoroye has been named in the three-man list of United World Wrestling’s History Makers for 2017.
Tunisia’s Marwa Amri and Chile’s Yasmani Acosta completed the list of the History Makers released by the world wrestling ruling body on Tuesday.
Adekuoroye and Amriearlier this year became the first African women to reach the gold medal bout of a senior world championship in Paris.
In the 55kg semifinals of the women’s freestyle, Adekuoroye, a 2015 bronze medalist picked up the technical superiority victory over Belarus’ Irina Kurachkina to become the second African woman to reach the gold medal finals.
Also, Tunisia’s Marwa Amri, Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, was the first woman from Africa to reach the world finals by besting two-time Asia champion Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova (KGZ) 8-7 in the semifinals. Amri would finish the day with the silver medal at 58kg after being defeated by 2016 Olympic champion American Helen Maroulis in the finals.
Like Amri, Adekuoroye would also bring home the silver medal after dropping her finals match.
This year alone, Odunayo Adekuoroye has swept all the sports gongs starting with being named the Sportswoman of the Year at the prestigious Nigeria Sports Award while New Telegraph newspaper has named her the sportswoman of the year as their maiden award night.
It was Chile’s Yasmani Acosta, formerly of Cuba, who came to Paris with hopes of giving Chile their first-ever world medal in wrestling. Prior to the 2017 World Championships, Chile had never medaled in any style at any age level.
Acosta won three matches before falling to Estonia’s Heiki Nabi in the semifinals. He grabbed Chile’s first ever world medal with a victory over Ukraine’s Mykola Kuchmi in the bronze medal bout.
