How to legally make complaint against SARS — PCRRU
The Nigerian Police Force Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit has opened channels through which complaints against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS can be reported.
The PCRRU made the information public through a poster Twitted by the Unit on Saturday.
On the poster which has graphics depicting men on SARS uniform along with SARS squad vehicle also carries the slogan, “Bail Is Free”.
The channels posted on the poster are 08057000001 and 08057000001 for calls, 08057000003 for SMS and WhatsApp messages, 2BA2B5DE for BlackBerry messages, @PoliceNG_PCRRU for Twitter and www.facebook.com/PolicePCRRU for Facebook messages.
Email channels listed on the poster are, [email protected] and [email protected]. A website url for the purpose was given on the poster as www.npf.gov.ng/complaint.
The PCRRU assured Nigerians through the poster that complaints would be handled swiftly as it the unit claims not to tolerate impunity.
The move by the PCRRU may be connected to the public outcry that has trailed the activities of many SARS officials in recent times.
Late in October 2017, a 2015 graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ekwere Imoh, was shot by policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Oyo State Police Command. The policemen also shot a female friend of his, identified simply as Doris, who was with him. There were no concrete reasons for shooting the duo as they were neither criminals nor under arrest.
Earlier in the same month, a lady, Kachi Anifela Zion, accused officers of SARS in Ilorin of sexual molestation. She said a male SARS official under the pretence of searching her, dipped his hand in her underwear.
She further revealed that the officer threatened to beat her if she shouted, adding that the officer continued to fondle, rough handle and humiliate her for several minutes.
“He put his hands inside my bra, while I was shouting and trying to get out, he said he was going to beat me up if he heard another sound, amidst all my crying and struggles he rough handled me, dipped his hands in my pant, saying “no be today I start to dey see drugs for girl bra,” Kachi recounted.
The SARS official implicated in the matter was later arrested.
