Lagos doctors’ timing of strike inhumane, wrong – Hamzat
The Lagos Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, on Tuesday told the striking doctors that the timing of their action is wrong because of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is not the right time when there is a global issue. It is inhumane, wrong and we must call a spade a spade,” the News Agency of Nigeria has reported.
The striking doctors acted under the aegis of the Medical Guild in the state.
Medical Guild is the Association of Medical Doctors employed by the Lagos State Government.
The Guild had, on Monday, commenced a three-day warning strike over issues affecting their safety and welfare.
The deputy governor said it was not right for the doctors to go on strike, especially at a time when the Coronavirus pandemic was ravaging the whole world.
“This is not the right time when there is a global issue. It is inhumane, wrong and we must call a spade a spade.
“Are we going to mortgage the lives of our people? Please, go back to work so that you can serve and protect the people you have sworn to protect,” Hamzat said.
Chairman, Lagos State Health Commission, Dr. Adebayo Aderiye, also expressed displeasure about the strike, saying that the incumbent administration had made the health sector a top priority right from inception.
Aderiye appealed to the striking doctors to go back to work.
