Cross River: Mob lynch suspected motorcycle thieves
A mob has reportedly lynched three suspected motorcycle thieves after they allegedly snatched a motorcycle from its owner.
One of the thieves was allegedly set ablaze while the other two were beaten to death.
The incident happened in Ogoja, northern Cross River State on Tuesday.
It was gathered that two of the suspected okada thieves flagged down a motorcycle rider at Igoli in Ogoja, and asked the rider to take them to Ndok junction on Ogoja-Ikom highway.
However, along the way they alleged snatched the motorcycle from him with the support of another gang member who allegedly pulled a gun at a spot along the route.
An eyewitness said:
“As the okada man was taking two of them to Ndok junction, they asked the rider to stop and another member of the gang who was waiting at a spot joined them and brought out a gun and threatened the okada man and he handed them the bike.”
The eyewitness said as the thieves sped off, the okada owner raised the alarm and other okada riders pursued and caught up with the thieves.
“Two of them ran into the bush while one was caught with the okada near FRSC checkpoint along the Ogoja – Ikom highway and dragged back to the junction where he was set on fire alive,” he said.
He said the other two were eventually caught and beaten with sticks and stoned to death but were not set ablaze as police intervened.
He said gangs usually snatched motorcycles heading to that area.
A police officer in the area confirmed the incident but said the Police Public Relations Officer is the “authorised person to speak to the press.”
Contacted, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, said:
“I have not been informed about the incident. Let me call and find out.”
