A 30-year-old man has committed suicide by hanging at a classroom in Government Secondary School, Gurku, Nasarawa State.
The deceased, identified as James Samuel, did not leave a suicide note.
WuzupNigeria gathered that Samuel was a Tiv man from Benue State.
He was believed to have committed suicide on Friday night. His remains were discovered by a resident in the area, who is also a police officer serving in Abuja.
On discovering the incident, the policeman reported the matter at the Gurku Police Outpost.
Though the deceased left no suicide note, the police found two pictures of himself during childhood and that of his mother at the scene.
Samuel’s remains were brought down in the presence of the police and taken out of the government facility by family members.
His father, who is the Tiv community leader in Gurku, disclosed that suicide is a taboo in the community.
He said,
“He was popular among his peers. He is a Tiv, but understands Gbagyi, Jaba, Hausa and Gwandara tribes.
“I learnt that this is the first suicide in the history of Gurku land and that it is taboo here.
“My late son attended Government Secondary school Gurku, he was a farmer, welder and a traditional drummer.”
Confirming the unfortunate incident to our correspondent, the paramount ruler of Gurku, Alhaji Jibrin Waziri who spoke through an aide, Madakin Gurku, Zubairu Adamu, said he visited the scene.
