A Nigerian lady was left puzzled recently after approaching her alma mater to apply for her transcript to study abroad.

The lady, an M.Sc degree holder from the university, was told she cannot be issued the document because she needs to rewrite some courses she failed during her programme. This is coming four years after graduation and a year after receiving her M.Sc certificate from the same university.

It is not news that getting academic credentials from a public institution in Nigeria could be almost as impossible as a camel passing through the hole of a needle.

Nigerian universities, polytechnics and other academic institutions seem to have one thing in common when it comes to delaying students’ certificates and transcripts.

When you eventually get it after a lot of frustrating hurdles, pray you don’t have to go back to them because your name may have been misspelt. That is the sad reality of Nigerian public academic institutions.

Warnings by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to universities against the unnecessary delay of students’ results and transcripts have continued to fall on deaf ears.

Popular career development expert and lecturer in the United Kingdom, Dr. Dipo Awojide shared the story of the lady who was told she has a pending course to take after applying for her transcript four years after graduation.

He shared the unsurprising story via his verified Twitter handle on Monday afternoon.

Awojide said the lady is planning to travel abroad to further her study and the transcript of her Masters’ programme is a prerequisite to be admitted for the study.

A visibly angry Awojide tweeted:

Nigerian Universities are at it again. Just spoke to someone who finished her MSc in 2016, collected Statement of Result in 2018 and Certificate in 2019.

“Now she’s applying for transcript to study abroad but has been told she failed some courses and need to come retake them.”

Though he didn’t mention the name of the institution, he, however, revealed that it is one of the Federal Universities in the country.
