Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, recently sent an audience at a public event into a bout of laughter with his whimsical reference to the infamous ‘constituted authority’ remark of his predecessor, Abiola Ajimobi.
Makinde was seen in a video presently making the rounds on social media speaking at an event reportedly held at the Ladoke Akintola University and had in attendance students of the institution.
While the audience was murmuring as he addressed them, he asked in Yoruba:
“All these things you are doing, can you do it before constituted authority?”
The governor and the crowd erupted in laughter after the comment.
In 2017, Ajimobi court controversy over his ‘constituted authority’ comment while demanding respect from protesting students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, who had stormed his office to ask him to resolve the crisis in their institution.
In the viral video which became a trending topic on social media for several weeks, Ajimobi was seen talking down on the protesting students whose institution had been shut for eight months before the protest to his office in Ibadan.
He told the students in Yoruba:
“You complain that your school has been shut down for eight months, am I the one who closed your school?”

While the governor was still addressing them, the protesting students jeered him, Ajimobi became visibly angry and told them:
“If this is how you want to talk to me, then go ahead and do your worst. If you think you can be troublesome, I dare you…I am ready for you. Let’s see what you can do.
“You have no respect for constituted authority.
“This is not the first time schools are getting shut. If your school was shut down for eight months, so what?
“If you come here shouting at me, I am not going to talk to you. If you came here to start a fight, do go ahead. This government will not tolerate any nonsense from anybody.
“Even if I don’t pay salary, the fact is that I am the constituted authority for Oyo State.”
The outburst earned Ajimobi the label of ‘constituted authority’ throughout his stay in office and after he left in May.
