76 protesters flying Russian flags in Kano transferred to Abuja – Police
The Kano State Police Command has transferred 76 suspects, including a foreigner, to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further investigation.
These suspects were arrested for allegedly flying Russian flags during recent nationwide hunger protests and are facing charges of sedition.
State Police Commissioner, Salman Garba, shared this update on Monday while addressing the press. He said, “This press conference today aims to provide a comprehensive update on the recent violent incidents that resulted in the wanton destruction and looting of government and public properties in Kano State. These incidents were instigated by hoodlums under the guise of a nationwide protest.”
Garba revealed that the police have arrested at least 873 suspects and recovered a large quantity of items. “We have so far prosecuted 600 suspects for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief, and arson,” he said.
He also noted that 150 suspects were arrested and prosecuted for breaking the curfew imposed by the Kano State Government. Six suspects involved in the destruction and looting of the Kano Printing Press (KPP) are currently under investigation.
In addition, 41 suspects have been apprehended for major crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and car theft. The police recovered items including two AK-47 rifles and various properties looted from the Audu Bako Secretariat, NCC Office, High Court Complexes, Kano Printing Press, and supermarkets.
Garba emphasized the police’s commitment to maintaining order and safety in the state. “Despite the challenges posed by the recent protest, it is important to highlight some of the achievements recorded by the Police Command in crime prevention, management, and control. We have successfully achieved significant successes within the period under review,” he said.
He added that the police have made notable arrests, including two suspected kidnappers, five suspected armed robbers, and eight suspected car thieves, among others.
The Kano Police Command continues its efforts to address and manage the situation while working to ensure the safety and security of Kano residents.
