Hamas frees two more hostages

Published

Two more women hostages whom Hamas captured during the October 7 attacks on Israel have been released by the militant group on Monday.

The Islamist group’s military wing said in a statement that the release was done for “compelling humanitarian” reasons after Qatar and Egypt mediated the process.

Israeli media reported that the freed women were taken to the Rafah border crossing, which links Gaza to Egypt. However, there was no immediate confirmation from Israeli authorities.

The two women were among the 222 hostages Israel confirmed were abducted by Hamas militants who crossed the border and launched deadly attacks on kibbutz communities, towns, and military bases in southern Israel.

The attacks killed about 1,400 people, making it one of the worst incidents in Israel’s history.

According to the Gaza health ministry, Israel retaliated with a military campaign against Hamas, causing over 5,000 casualties from air strikes on Gaza.

Hamas claimed that Israel initially rejected the release of the two hostages and breached previously agreed-upon arrangements with mediators.
