Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, says he is not interested in any political position ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, made this clear during a visit to the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa in Abuja on Monday, May 19, 2025.
He said the only kind of partnership or coalition he supports is one that will help reduce hunger, poverty, and improve education and healthcare in Nigeria.
“The only coalition I am interested in is the one against hunger, poverty, and the bad state of healthcare and education in the country. I am not desperate for any position,” Obi said.
His statement comes as rumours spread about a possible alliance between opposition leaders, including himself and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
However, Obi rejected claims that he has agreed to be a running mate in any future election.
“Anyone saying I have agreed to be vice president is only playing selfish politics. I am focused on how to make Nigeria better, not on positions,” he added.
During the visit, Obi also donated money to support a school project in the diocese.
He said that since the government has failed to provide free and quality education, the church has been forced to carry the responsibility.
Obi was recently seen greeting President Tinubu at the Vatican during the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV. This led to comments online about their relationship.
Speaking about the meeting, Obi said, “I am not an enemy of the President. I only showed respect to him as required by protocol. My only enemies are corruption and bad leadership that have made life hard for Nigerians.”
