Lagos: 19-year-old flood victim’s body recovered from Surulere canal
The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, has said the remains of 19-year-old Aishat has been recovered from the Onilegogoro canal, in the Surulere area of Lagos State.
The heavy downpour on Monday swept away Aishat after she reportedly fell into the canal while trying to navigate her way to a destination in the area.
Efforts by some residents and passersby, who rushed to the scene of the incident, to rescue the victim were said to have proved abortive.
Oke-Osanyintolu, while reacting to the development, said that an operation had commenced to rescue Aishat.
In a follow-up reaction on Tuesday, Oke-Osanyintolu, however, said the victim’s remains were recovered around the Onilegogoro in Surulere around 8.30 am, adding that she was buried around the canal where she was recovered.
He said:
“Around 12:30pm on Monday 22, 2020, a 19-year-old teenage girl, Aishat, was swept away by the flood which submerged the canal along Alapafuja close linking bank Olemoh in Surulere as a result of persistent rainfall.
“However, LASEMA Response Team and community members searched for her body through the adjoining canals but to no avail.
“Furthermore, her dead body was later found at Onilegogoro canal in Surulere around 8:30am on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, and was buried by the community members beside the canal.”
