A man identified as Newton Isokpehi, who claimed to be a serving officer of the Nigerian Police Force with 26 years of service, has sparked outrage after a viral video showed him threatening to shoot anyone who records him while on duty.
According to The Punch, the officer made the threats in a video that circulated widely on social media on Wednesday. Speaking in Pidgin English, Isokpehi warned members of the public and even senior officers he believed authorised the filming of police personnel.
In the video, he allegedly said anyone bold enough to approach him with a camera while he was armed and on duty risked being killed. He also threatened to โclear everybody down,โ including bystanders around anyone attempting to record him.
The controversial video was traced to a TikTok account bearing the name โNewton isokpehi for lifeโ with the username โ#actor459,โ where several videos of the man in police uniform had been posted before the clip was later deleted. However, it is not verified whether Isokpehi is truly a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force.
During the viral clip, the man also displayed what he described as bullet wounds and scars sustained during years of service, lamenting the harsh conditions faced by police officers and poor welfare within the force. He claimed officers suffer daily despite risking their lives in the line of duty.
The video has since triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians condemning the threats and calling for disciplinary action if the man is confirmed to be an active police officer.
In a later development, Isokpehi released another video apologising for his comments, saying his earlier remarks were made out of frustration and annoyance rather than genuine intent. He admitted that citizens have the right to record police officers but argued that the practice had been taken โtoo far.โ
