UK global magazine ‘Reader’s Digest’ folds after 86 years

After 86 years of serving as a wellspring of knowledge and entertainment, the UK edition of Reader’s Digest is bidding farewell.

The beloved monthly magazine, renowned for its curated articles and features, has announced its closure on April 29.

Editor-in-Chief Eva Mackevic took to LinkedIn to share the sombre news attributing the shutdown to the “financial pressures of today’s unforgiving magazine publishing landscape.” Mackevic expressed her sadness and paid tribute to the magazine’s dedicated staff, writers, and collaborators over the years.

Reader’s Digest, founded in the US in 1922 by DeWitt Wallace and Lila Wallace, reached the UK in 1938, captivating readers with its unique blend of health tips, financial advice, recipes, and more.

At its peak in 2000, the UK edition boasted a circulation of around one million copies per month but faced a decline in subsequent years.

Despite ownership changes and cost-cutting measures, the magazine struggled to stay afloat amid stiff competition and declining revenues in the digital age.
