Tinubu’s spokesman confirms Akeredolu’s death
The death of Ondo State governor Rotimi Akeredolu, aged 67, has been confirmed by a spokesman for President Bola Tinubu.
Akeredolu, who battled a prolonged illness, passed away at approximately 2:00 am on Wednesday at a German hospital where he had been receiving treatment.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga expressed condolences in a tweet, stating “Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu a.k.a Aketi finally lost the battle with ravaging illness. May he Rest In Perfect Peace.”
The late governor is survived by his wife Betty and four children.
A senior government official in Ondo State revealed that Governor Akeredolu died after a protracted struggle with leukemia and prostate cancer.
His health had deteriorated, prompting him to return to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany.
In December, due to the worsening condition of his health, Akeredolu handed over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, before embarking on another trip to Germany for further treatment.
The Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Olateju, previously referred to the governor’s ailment as “somatic” during a television interview.
The Ondo State government has not officially commented on Governor Akeredolu’s passing at the time of filing this report, and members of the cabinet have been unavailable for comment on the development.
In the wake of Akeredolu’s demise, preparations are reportedly underway to swear in Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the new governor.
A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ondo State disclosed that arrangements for the transition are being finalized.
