Labour unions demand immediate reversal of electricity tariff hike
At the May Day celebration in Abuja on Wednesday, the Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, jointly called on the Federal Government to reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.
They emphasized the need to implement a service reflective tariff and halt the segregation of customers.
Addressing the audience, Ajaero and Osifo presented an 18-item list of demands, highlighting the urgent need for a review of the electricity privatization exercise in the country with the aim of reversing it.
They also urged the government to fulfill its commitment to roll out Compressed Natural Gas buses nationwide.
Furthermore, the labour leaders advocated for a one-year moratorium on all taxes, levies, and dues imposed on the informal economy by state and local governments.
The recent increase in electricity tariffs, announced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on April 3, 2024, particularly affects customers classified under Band A, who enjoy 20 hours of daily power supply.
This group of customers is set to see their electricity bills rise from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour.
Criticism of the tariff hike has been widespread, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the timing of the increase amidst prevailing economic hardships.
