Injured Lewandowski returns to training
Bayern Munich’s has announced that its top-scorer Robert Lewandowski returned to training on Monday.
The Polish missed the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain which they lost 3-2 last week due to an injury picked up while on international duty.
However, with the Germans heading to France for a return leg this week, Lewandowski has been ruled out despite returning to training.
The 32-year-old completed sprints and ball drills during an individual session at the club’s Säbener Straße training complex.
Bayern said Lewandowski “is not available” for Tuesday’s second-leg in Paris.
Bayern’s medical staff had predicted he would be out for four weeks, but the striker took part in running drills on Monday as Bayern trained during a snowfall in Munich.
Lewandowski scored twice in his country’s 3-0 win over Andorra in Group I of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying on 28 March but was then taken off after 63 minutes.
The 2020 FIFA Men’s Best Player was subsequently ruled out for around a month and has already missed games against RB Leipzig, Paris Saint-Germain and Union Berlin.
He has not travelled for Bayern’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg in Paris, and is unlikely to be involved at the weekend when the record champions travel to Wolfsburg, but could make his comeback against either Bayer Leverkusen (20 April) or Mainz (24 April).
Lewandowski has scored an incredible 35 goals in 25 league matches so far in 2020/21 and had been firmly on course to smash Gerd Müller’s second-season league record of 40 goals from the 1971/72 campaign.
