Ex-Barca footballer Dani Alves faces sexual assault trial today
Former Barcelona soccer star Dani Alves will face trial starting Monday, a year following allegations of sexual assault against a young woman at a nightclub in Barcelona.
Alves, who previously played for Barcelona, stands accused of sexually assaulting the woman on the night of December 30, 2022. He maintains his innocence regarding the allegations.
The trial is slated to extend through Wednesday at a courthouse in Barcelona.
Prosecutors are pushing for a nine-year prison sentence for Alves if he is found guilty, while the legal team representing his accuser is seeking a 12-year sentence.
Alves, now 40, was arrested on January 20, 2023, after complying with a police summons during his visit to Spain.
Despite offering to surrender his passport and wear a tracking device, Alves’ requests for bail were turned down due to concerns about him fleeing.
In the event of a guilty verdict, Alves has been instructed to set aside 150,000 euros ($162,000) for potential compensation to his alleged victim, along with damages.
A highly accomplished player in soccer, Alves has secured major titles with prominent clubs such as Barcelona, Juventus, and Paris Saint-Germain. He contributed to Brazil’s success in winning two Copa America trophies and an Olympic gold medal.
Following his arrest, Alves had his contract terminated by Mexican club Pumas.
