The Zamfara Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has launched a special patrol to tackle reckless driving, truck overloading, and the absence of speed-limiting devices on highways across the state.
The Public Education Officer of the command, Aliyu Isah, disclosed this in Gusau on Thursday, noting that the patrol became necessary following frequent reports of dangerous driving by truck operators.
“Most often, these drivers engage in overloading, mixed loading of goods, animals and human beings, and they do so at high speeds,” he said.
He explained that the new patrol will not only focus on truck drivers but also apprehend all other traffic offenders, including those without speed-limiting devices, vehicles with concealed number plates, and those driving without proper registration.
The Sector Commander, Aliyu Ma’aji, urged motorists to support the corps’ personnel during the exercise for their own safety.
“We are committed to ensuring safer roads in Zamfara. Motorists must strictly adhere to road safety laws, including activation of speed-limiting devices,” Ma’aji said.
He also warned drivers plying the Zamfara-Sokoto highway to desist from covering their number plates, stressing that offenders would face prosecution.
Earlier this month, the FRSC also issued a broader nationwide warning as the ’ember months’ approach. The Corps Commander in charge of the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway, Nasir Mohammed, reminded motorists that “speed is sweet, but it kills faster than any deadly disease,” stressing the need for caution to reduce fatal crashes.
