South Korea came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in their opening Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Guadalajara.

According to Sky Sport, the Koreans dominated much of the contest but found themselves trailing after Czech defender Ladislav Krejci headed home from a long throw delivered by Vladimir Coufal early in the second half.

Despite controlling possession and creating the better chances, South Korea struggled to convert their opportunities, with captain Son Heung Min missing several openings.

However, the Czech Republic’s lead lasted only eight minutes as In Beom Hwang produced a moment of quality, cutting inside from a pass by Kang In Lee before curling a precise effort into the corner to level the score.

The Czechs thought they had regained the advantage when Tomas Soucek headed into the net from another set piece, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

South Korea then completed the comeback through substitute Hyeon Gyu Oh, who finished from close range after being set up by Hwang’s low cross.

The result leaves South Korea level on points with Mexico, who defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the group.

South Korea impressed with their technical quality and attacking approach, enjoying 62 per cent possession and completing nearly twice as many passes as their opponents.

Speaking after the match, match winner Hyeon Gyu Oh revealed he almost missed the game due to illness.

“My body temperature had gone up to 38 degrees because I wasn’t feeling well. I wondered if I could even play. As a striker, I am relieved and thankful,” he said.

Head coach Myung Bo Hong praised his players for their determination and refusal to give up after falling behind.

“It was our first game and a very difficult one. The win itself makes me happy, but what’s even more positive is that our boys won by not giving up,” he said.

Czech Republic coach Miroslav Koubek admitted his side made costly mistakes and acknowledged that South Korea deserved the victory.

The Koreans will now look to build on their impressive start as they continue their campaign in Group A.
