World Cup: D’Tigress avoid US, get Australia, France
Nigeria women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, have been drawn against hosts Australia and France for the 2022 World Cup.
After the draw which was held on Thursday, the African giants were pitted alongside Serbia, fourth-ranked Canada and Japan in group B of the FIBA tournament kicking off in Sydney on September 22.
Otis Hughley’s managed to avoid world champions, USBWNT, who will face the likes of Belgium and China.
Meanwhile, Russia will be replaced by one more team which will be selected by governing body FIBA to complete group A following the expulsion of the country over President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
On the other hand, Nigeria will be looking to pull a double on world number six, France, whom they defeated by 67-65 points at the just-concluded FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournaments in Belgrade, Serbia.
Nigeria could make it to the quarter-finals by finishing among the top four teams from group B.
The 10-day tournament will culminate on October 1.
Group A – Belgium, China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, TBD, South Korea, United States
Group B – France, Serbia, Japan, Nigeria, Canada, Australia
