President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, has called on employers across Nigeria to ensure better protection, fair remuneration, and improved working conditions for workers, as the country marked Workers’ Day on May 1.

In a statement issued to commemorate the occasion, Osigwe acknowledged the crucial role Nigerian workers play across all sectors and stressed the need for more than just ceremonial recognition.

“We celebrate the vital role workers play in sectors of our national life; their dedication sustains our economy, institutions and daily lives. Beyond celebration, today presents an opportunity for sober reflection,” he said.

Highlighting the challenges faced by many workers, he noted that economic hardship, unsafe work environments, job insecurity, and inadequate pay remain widespread.

“Too many Nigerian workers still face harsh economic realities, unsafe working conditions, job insecurity and pay that falls far short of the rising cost of living,” Osigwe stated.

He further emphasized the necessity for practical reforms and improved standards in labour practices.

“It is, therefore, not enough to offer praise without concrete action. They deserve a living wage and many more benefits.”

The NBA president underscored that Nigerian workers consistently give their best to the nation and deserve fair compensation in return.

He pointed out that earning a living wage is not merely a demand but a fundamental right.

“A living wage is not a privilege,” Osigwe said. “It is a constitutional and legal entitlement of workers.”

He urged both public and private sector employers to uphold ethical labour practices and create secure, non-discriminatory workspaces.

“We also urge employers, both in the public and private sectors, to imbibe good labour practices, ensure safety in workplaces, and create environments where workers can thrive without fear of exploitation, intimidation or discrimination.”
