The deaths of two students of the University of Lagos at Elegushi Beach should have been avoided, according to the Lagos State government.

The Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Mr. Ade Akinsanya, attributed the deaths of Adesola Ogunmefun and 25-year-old Funmilayo Odusina, to negligence by the beach operators.

“There is no doubt that the operators of the beach in question failed to adhere to standard safety practice,” Akinsanya said.

“The Lagos State Government, through its safety commission, sets safety standards for all sectors involved in socio-economic activities in the state.”

As a result of the tragic event, the commissioner warned that the government would impose heavy sanctions beach operators that failed to comply strictly with safety guidelines.

Ogunmefun and Odusina, both postgraduate students of International Law and Diplomacy at UNILAG, drowned on Sunday, June 5, while hanging out with a friend, Bolu.
