Wole Soyinka: Respecting elders is just an excuse not to challenge them – Seun Kuti
Seun Kuti, son of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Fela, has lent his voice to the ongoing debate on Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka’s recent experience aboard a flight.
WuzupNaija reports that oil magnate Tonye Cole shared the story of how a young man ordered the literary icon to vacate his seat aboard a flight and refused to listen to pleas from other passengers to allow the octogenarian remain on the seat.
Reacting to the incident which has continued to spark mixed reactions among Nigerians on social media, the Afrobeat singer justified the action of the young man, saying those advocating respect for elders are using it as a justification for youths not to stand up to challenge elders.

He added that Soyinka too did not allow himself be bullied by authorities as a young man.
The singer was reacting to the ongoing social media this in response to the trending issue of a young man requesting the literary giant to leave his window side seat aboard a flight.
He took to Instagram and wrote:
“We outchea too you know!!! That being said, the Nigerian professional class is callous and exemplified by this whole WS issue. The only culture they know is Agbada and how to respect elders. Just aesthetics nothing concrete.
“This ‘respecting elders’ is just an excuse not to stand up to elders!! To go around sucking up and kisses donkeys!( u know the right word). Ask them other than their agbada and ‘respecting elders’ what other African culture do they practice or hold higher than European and Arabic ideals.
“Ask them, the answer is Zero, Zilch, Nada. Respecting the elders the Nigerian professional class’ shelter as they continue to collude and connive to destroy us! Wole Soyinka doesn’t mind, he never ‘respected elders’ in his own days !!!.”
