The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that he will back only candidates loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming FCT Area Councils election slated for February 21.

Wike made this known on Saturday in Abuja during activities marking the 60th birthday of Senator Sandy Onor.

He emphasized that his support in the election would not be influenced by party lines but strictly by allegiance to the President.

“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on February 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said.

“It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand.”

The FCT Minister reaffirmed that he has no regrets about backing President Tinubu and maintained that he would continue to uphold his political beliefs.

Speaking about the celebrant, Wike described Senator Onor as a reliable associate, loyal friend, and brother, adding that genuine friendship is tested during challenging periods.

Born on February 14, 1966, in Ikom, Cross River State, Onor’s transition from academia to public office formed part of the tributes at the event.

Professor Anthony Eyang noted that the historian’s progression from the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and political engagement in Cross River State demonstrates commitment to scholarship, leadership, and service.

Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, described Onor as an exemplary figure ready for leadership, while former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, praised him as brave and intellectually distinguished.

A Festschrift was unveiled in Onor’s honour at the ceremony, alongside a N50 million contribution raised by friends and associates.
In his remarks, Senator Onor reflected on his milestone, saying that at 60, he had come to understand that while excellence, character, and diligence are essential, true success ultimately depends on the hand of God. He also thanked his family, friends, and supporters for their steadfast love and encouragement.
