The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed the demolition of an estate constructed on a designated green area in Guzape, Abuja, describing the development as unlawful.

The directive was issued on Monday during his routine inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects across the capital city.

Wike explained that the land had originally been allocated for Park and Recreation but was unlawfully converted into a residential estate without the required approval.

He stated that, in addition to pulling down the structures, the land allocation would be revoked, stressing that the Federal Capital Territory Administration would strictly enforce planning regulations in line with the Abuja Master Plan.

The minister cautioned that authorities would not condone intentional breaches of land-use policies.

Wike expressed concern that some developers deliberately ignore planning laws under the assumption that changes in government would eventually allow them to legitimise illegal constructions.

“People think that government will come and go and they will continue what they are doing. We will not allow that here. It does not matter who is involved; we will do the right thing.

“This place was given for Park and Recreation not for the development of an estate. But from what you have seen, they are developing it into an estate, which is a clear violation.

“We will not allow that,” he said.

The minister also alleged that certain developers exploit administrative loopholes and, in some cases, collaborate with insiders within government agencies to secure approvals for projects that contravene regulations.

He said that while some civil servants may be involved, “it will not stop us from doing what is right”.

Speaking further on the inspection exercise, Wike noted that the visits were aimed at evaluating the progress of key projects slated for inauguration to mark President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

Providing updates on infrastructure, he disclosed that work on the road linking the Renewed Hope City in Karsana to Kubwa had advanced significantly, expressing confidence that it would be ready for commissioning.

He also inspected Arterial Road N16, stretching from Ring Road II to Ring Road III and connecting Jahi to Gwarimpa, describing the quality of construction as “impressive” and projecting completion by the end of May.

In addition, the minister visited the Airport Road to Kuje Highway and the Kuje Road to Gwagwalada, expressing satisfaction with the pace and standard of work on both projects.

Wike emphasised that road development remains a key component of the administration’s transport strategy within the FCT.

“You cannot have a good transport system without connectivity and a strong road network. When there is good road infrastructure, transport becomes easy and efficient,” he said.

He reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to enforce urban planning regulations while continuing to invest in infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity and accessibility across the territory.
