FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has strongly defended the ₦39 billion spent on renovating Abuja’s International Conference Centre, dismissing critics as people who “lack good taste.”

Speaking at a road commissioning on Friday, Wike revealed that every part of the facility was replaced except the building’s block structure during the comprehensive renovation. The centre was originally built in 1991 for ₦240 million under General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime.

“Those criticizing the cost don’t understand economics,” Wike stated. “What was the exchange rate in 1991 compared to now? Nigeria as Africa’s giant must have facilities that reflect our status.”

The minister also addressed controversy over renaming the centre after President Bola Tinubu, who commissioned it on Tuesday:

“Nnamdi Azikiwe didn’t build the airport bearing his name. MKO Abiola didn’t build his stadium. Why the noise now? I’ll always defend my boss without regrets.”

Some opposition figures, including ex-senator Shehu Sani, had criticized both the renaming and renovation cost. But Wike insisted: “We have taste and want the best for Nigeria. The President has delivered excellence.”

The refurbished Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre features state-of-the-art facilities, with officials saying it now meets global standards for hosting major international events.
