Why we’d test corps members, couples for drug abuse — NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has explained why it is advocating for drug integrity tests for youth corps members and couples planning to marry.

NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa, said the initiative aims to discourage substance abuse and provide early treatment for those struggling with drug dependence.

Speaking to the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, on April 23, 2025, Marwa emphasized that the drug tests would not be punitive.

Instead, the goal is to identify drug users early, so they can receive treatment before their condition worsens.

Marwa also congratulated the NYSC DG on his appointment, describing the NYSC as a national treasure and key to fostering unity across the country.

“The drug problem is destroying our youth, families, and communities,” Marwa said. “There is hardly anywhere in Nigeria where drug abuse is not an issue. One in seven Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 uses drugs.”

He added that while efforts have been made to reduce the supply of drugs, the NDLEA’s focus is now also on reducing the demand for drugs through preventive measures. This includes counseling and rehabilitation, as well as the implementation of drug integrity tests.

Marwa further noted the importance of NYSC’s “War Against Drug Abuse” clubs in camps, calling it a positive step. He stressed that drug integrity tests for youth corps members would be a major part of the effort to reduce drug demand in the country.

The NDLEA chief also suggested that couples intending to marry should provide a drug-free certificate before the wedding. “It is better to detect drug use early before it leads to addiction, which can cause psychiatric problems and become a danger to both the individual and society,” Marwa stated.
