Nigerian socialite cum billionaire, Obinna Oyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, for the first time, shared details about the reason he “went all out” for his mother’s lavish funeral ceremony.
Obi Cubana shared these details in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwu.
He said the family looked forward to their mother breaking a generational jinx as nobody had lived up to 80 years.
Recall that before July 2021, not much was known about the life of the nightlife entrepreneur.
However, Obi Cubana gained the spotlight after staging a talk-of-the-town burial for his septuagenarian mum, and no ceremony staged by a Nigerian in Nigeria has come close since then.
The socialite said he and his siblings were saving up for their mother’s 80th birthday before she died, and having lived up to age 79; they decided to have a lavish funeral for her.
He said, “In my family, nobody has lived up to 80 years, and I’m saying this for the first time. My father died at 66, my grandmother died at 75, my grandfather died at 78, and it ran through to my mom. All my siblings are married and successful, and we were praying for my mother to break the generational jinx and the kind of party we would throw for you; nobody would ever do it and will start saving up for that. And she died on 31st December, and she was 79 after celebrating 78, and the good thing is that from 74, every year.
“We celebrate her birthday massively, even during the COVID-19 year, we had to celebrate her in my elder brother’s house in Abuja; we didn’t travel, and that was the only way. My mother was a humanitarian and also catered for widows. We were planning for the 80th birthday because she was so much looking forward to that age and she died. So I said she tried 79 and a half, so we brought everything together to celebrate her. At least she tried and almost broke the jinx; that was why we went all out for the burial.”
