The Nigerian Communications Commission has clarified the reason behind the introduction of identical codes for the country’s 224 million active mobile lines, citing the need for identity authentication and protection.

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, revealed this information during the NCC special day at the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair.

Maida, represented by director Mr. Reuben Mouka, emphasized NCC’s role as an Independent National Regulatory Authority overseeing telecommunications services in Nigeria.

He outlined the commission’s vision to create a regulatory environment ensuring universal access to affordable and equitable services, supporting the nation’s economic growth.

Addressing the contribution of the telecoms industry to the nation’s GDP in 2023, standing at 13.5%, Maida underscored the importance of addressing challenges faced by consumers.

He stated, “As we promote economic growth through the development of local content, we must also address the challenges faced by consumers, and NCC is committed to protecting their rights while ensuring their satisfaction.”

Highlighting NCC’s commitment to consumer protection, Maida outlined measures implemented to safeguard consumer interests, such as establishing a robust regulatory framework, promoting transparency, quality of service, and fair competition. The commission has also set up channels for consumer redress to resolve disputes efficiently.

The NCC introduced Harmonized Short Codes in May 2023, allowing consumers to use the same codes across all mobile networks for various services. For instance, the code *310# can be used universally to check airtime balance. This initiative aims to enhance the Quality of Experience for consumers.

Maida emphasized the importance of National Identification Number-Subscriber Identification Module (NIN-SIM) linkage for authentication and identity protection.

Subscribers without NIN can obtain it from National Identification Management Commission Enrolment Centres or Service Providers’ Customer Care Centres. NIN-SIM linkage can be done by sending NIN to 996 or dialing *996*.

In the interest of national security, Maida announced the directive for all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of subscribers not linked to their NINs on or before February 28, 2024.

He urged subscribers to comply with the linkage process to ensure a secure communication environment.
