The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has explained why it dropped money laundering charges against popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky.

During a hearing with the House of Representatives Committee investigating allegations of corruption involving Bobrisky, Bilikisu Buhari, a representative of the EFCC, stated that the decision was made after Bobrisky’s confession in court about the abuse of naira notes.

“There was no financial inducement to any member of the commission. Everything we did was in line with the core values of the EFCC,” she emphasized.

The committee, chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, requested that the individual who made an audio recording related to the case be present at the next session, which was adjourned indefinitely.

At the hearing, social media personality VeryDarkMan, who has accused Bobrisky of corruption, testified before the committee. He explained that he obtained audio recordings of Bobrisky from a person who had lent Bobrisky ₦4 million.

“I have more audio evidence against Bobrisky and will present it at the right time,” VeryDarkMan said, adding that Bobrisky had claimed to have a “Godfather,” but he did not know if that person was present at the hearing.

Bobrisky’s lawyer, Avwerosuoghene Omuvwie, informed the committee that Bobrisky was unable to attend the hearing due to illness. When asked to provide medical evidence, the lawyer admitted he did not have any documents from a doctor to support the claim.

Michael Beson Anukwa, Deputy Controller at the Maximum Correctional Center in Kirikiri, Lagos, testified that Bobrisky had been properly detained in the correctional facility, contrary to claims that he was held elsewhere.

“Bobrisky was admitted on April 13 with a valid warrant and transfer order from the Ikoyi Correctional facility. His biometric data was taken the next day,” Anukwa said.

Anukwa also explained that Bobrisky had spent 10 days in the medium correctional center before being moved to maximum security because he refused to eat the prison food and was approved for self-feeding. Due to his unique physical characteristics, Bobrisky was housed in a separate cell and received a total of 39 visitors during his stay.

The investigation continues as more evidence is expected to be presented in future hearings.
