Popular Nigerian DJ, DJ Neptune, has offered advice to Nigerian artistes, emphasizing the importance of financial planning and responsibility during their peak years in the music industry.
Speaking as a guest on the Zero Conditions Podcast, DJ Neptune highlighted the dangers of excessive spending and failing to invest for the future.
“Artistes feel fame is forever; that’s why some of them, while they are at their peak, don’t save up their money, they don’t invest,” he said.
He shared an example of a conversation he had recently, where someone pointed out that many artistes who receive advance payments often spend it on luxury cars. “I was with somebody the other day, and the person was saying these artistes that collect advance payments, they collect it and go and buy Benz. Is that not your future you are driving?” Neptune asked.
Reflecting on this, the DJ, who has worked with top artistes like Burna Boy and Rema, called the statement “deep” and a reality check for those in the industry.
He emphasized that fame can be fleeting, and without careful financial planning, many artistes may struggle when their popularity fades.
“That’s why I tell some of my colleagues, while you are on top, invest your money. If it’s properties you want to do, just have a side income,” Neptune advised.
He also pointed out that only a few artistes have the ability to sustain their careers beyond a decade, making it even more crucial to plan ahead. “It is only a few of us that have the grace to be in the game for more than five, ten years. You are appealing to a certain age group, and if you don’t know how to tone down and switch, you might have missed your way,” he concluded.
