Veteran Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has revealed that despite receiving numerous marriage proposals over the years, she has chosen to remain single because she has not yet met the right partner.
Speaking during an interview with actress Biola Bayo, the 52-year-old screen icon stated that being unmarried is not a problem for her and that she refuses to succumb to societal pressure.
“For me not to have a partner, the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, I don’t see it as a negative. I’ve been proposed to many times, and I’ve said no,” Akintola said.
She emphasized that marriage should be a deeply personal decision based on mutual desire and compatibility, not one made to satisfy external expectations. According to her, many women are pressured into marriage for the wrong reasons, leading to an increase in broken homes and divorces in Nigeria.
“Did you just marry because people say marry? Look at divorce ratings now in Nigeria, it’s skyrocketing. Some people are married before they leave the reception if the marriage has broken up,” she added.
Akintola also touched on parenting and gender roles, advocating for equal training and accountability for both boys and girls. She argued that boys should be taught to take responsibility for their actions just as girls are expected to do.
“Teach your sons that their body is the temple of God the same way you teach your daughters. As soon as you impregnate a girl, no more school for you, my dear. Go and work and raise your child,” she said.
Addressing the topic of online bullying and the pursuit of wealth in relationships, the actress advised women to focus on men with character, work ethic, and growth potential, rather than chasing after riches alone.
“Don’t focus on rich men. Focus on men who are hardworking and ready to grow with you,” she urged.
Akintola’s candid reflections have resonated with many, especially those who feel pressured by societal norms around marriage and gender expectations.
