American rapper Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., popularly known as T.I, has opened up on why he does not go to church, even though he identifies as a Christian.

The Atlanta-born artiste spoke during a recent interview with gospel singer Kirk Franklin, where he shared his views on religion, faith and the modern church.

T.I said he was raised in a strong Christian home and has no doubt about the existence of God, but added that he has never felt a personal connection with the church.

“I have never been a church person. I grew up in a strong Christian household. My grandma and auntie were very strong in prayer. So, I know how to pray and I know the word. And I know God is real, I’ve seen His presence and His hands in my life,” he said.

However, the rapper said his problem is with how churches operate today, describing them as businesses rather than spiritual spaces.

“But I have never felt the connection with the church. To be honest, I don’t think the church is real. I think it’s a business. It’s like a show. It’s like public-speaking, like a TED talk,” T.I said.

He also accused some Christian leaders of misusing the Bible to suit their personal interests and exploit worshippers.

“And sometimes, the clergies try to twist the word of God to benefit them,” he added.

The award-winning rapper further stated that he does not believe paying tithes or giving money to a church determines whether God answers prayers.

“Y’all telling me I gotta pay this joker for my God to hear my prayer? Mehn, I’m outta here,” he said.

T.I also explained that he does not believe there should be a middleman between him and God, insisting that his relationship with God is personal and direct, without the need for clergy involvement.
