President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he deliberately chose not to watch the final match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Falcons secured a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco, citing concerns over his health.
“I didn’t want to watch the WAFCON final because I didn’t want to have high blood pressure,” the President confessed during a reception held in honour of the team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
The Super Falcons, who arrived at the Villa at exactly 4:36 p.m., were received by the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, following their historic win which earned Nigeria a record-extending tenth WAFCON title.
In recognition of their achievement, President Tinubu announced several rewards for the team. Each player was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), allocated a three-bedroom apartment, and awarded the naira equivalent of $100,000.
The reception celebrated the Falcons’ resilient performance in Saturday’s final, where they overturned a first-half deficit to defeat host nation Morocco, reaffirming their status as the most successful women’s football team in Africa.
