Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed disappointment in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stating that it has deviated from its intended path.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, El-Rufai claimed he played a significant role in Tinubu’s emergence as president in the 2023 elections but insisted that the current government is not living up to expectations.
El-Rufai, who also served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, asserted his right to criticise the administration, highlighting his foundational role in the All Progressives Congress and his contribution to Tinubu’s rise to power.
“Everyone knows that I was one of the founding fathers of APC, and everyone knows I made some contributions in bringing Asiwaju to the presidency,” he said.
He questioned the logic behind silencing critics who played a role in bringing leaders to power, especially when those leaders are not performing in the interest of the people.
“If Asiwaju’s government has derailed and is not doing what we thought he would do and not siding with the interests of Nigerians, I should not criticise him because I contributed to bringing him, is that the logic in Nigeria these days?” El-Rufai queried.
He continued: “Where does that happen? The purpose of government is to get things done for the progress of the people and the country.”
The former governor further stressed that personal ties should not prevent citizens from holding public officeholders accountable.
“So, even if it’s my son who is the president or governor and is not doing the right thing, I lose the right to disagree or criticise? Is that how Nigeria has gotten? Have we gone that low?
“So, because when a person details and I contributed in getting him there, I am prohibited from commenting, is that what Nigeria has become?”
