Why DSTV didn’t air Nigeria’s win over Benin, other AFCON qualifiers
Nigerians were left displeased as cable station, DSTV, local channels failed to air the Super Eagles’ African Cup of Nations qualifier against the Squirrels of Benin Republic.
Gernot Rohr’s men scored a late winner through Paul Onuachu to go four points clear of the Squirrels atop of Group L having secured their qualification for the showdown in Cameroon.
Unfortunately, Nigerians were forced to watch the game over the internet via streaming apps and site as DSTV and other local stations failed to air the match.
Asides from Nigeria’s match, DSTV failed to air all other AFCON Qualifiers because the Confederation of African Football (CAF) cancelled its media and marketing rights agreement with French company, Lagardère Sports and Entertainment.
Super Sports, DSTV ‘s Sports channel that has aired all World Cup qualifiers, had no access to air its continental matches as a result of a breakdown in the 12-year media and marketing contract signed in 2015 after only three years.
Recall that Egypt’s Economic Court in November 2018 ruled that CAF did not open the rights acquisition to competitive bidding.
Notwithstanding, Nigerians have made their disappointment know on the popular microblogging site, Twitter, after the Super Eagles booked the golden ticket to next year’s tourney in Cameroon.
See what Nigerians had to say about DSTV ‘s inability to air the continent’s matches:
@heynighty wrote, “Dstv showed all European country’s qualifiers matches, but hasn’t shown a single African Afcon qualifiers match.
“Everything mustn’t be business, Africa needs to have a little dignity.”
In response, a follower, @EnumahFrancis said, “Always confirm before you judge or conclude. It’s not Dstv fault. CAF terminate a license that affected them (Its a very long story if I should put it that way) . I advise you do proper research.”
Another user, @Kano_J_A allegedly sacrificed his laptop for streaming at a viewing centre.
“At the view station today, DSTv and Star times disappoint us, old men, everybody was waiting around so I came through with my laptop and data, lol.
“Surprisingly lol dem dey gather money for my data. People still love their country Nà Govt dey fuck up.”
