The White House has opened an official TikTok account, even as President Donald Trump continues to give the Chinese-owned platform more time to avoid a ban in the United States.

The first post, a 27-second video, appeared on Tuesday with the caption: “America, we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” Within one hour, the account had already gained about 4,500 followers.

The move comes as TikTok’s future in America remains uncertain. A law passed earlier required the app to be sold to a non-Chinese company or be banned over national security concerns. The deadline was originally set for January 20, the day before Trump took office, but the president has since extended it twice.

In June, Trump gave TikTok another 90 days to secure a new buyer. That extension will end in mid-September, meaning the app could still face a ban if no deal is reached.

Although Trump once pushed for TikTok’s sale or outright ban, he later shifted his stance, saying the platform helped him connect with young voters during the 2024 election.

Trump’s own TikTok account has over 110 million followers, though his last post was on November 5, 2024, Election Day. On X, formerly Twitter, he has 108.5 million followers, while his personal platform, Truth Social, has 10.6 million.

TikTok, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, is one of the most popular apps worldwide with nearly two billion users.

The White House also runs official accounts on Instagram with 9.3 million followers
