Where is the Rule of Law? Nigerians atttack Amaechi as Justice Okoro opens can of worms

Justice John Inyang Okoro opened can of worms in his letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), Justice Mahmud Mohammed, on October 17, 2016.

The legal luminary was one of the justices of the Supreme Court and five judges of the Federal High Court whose homes were raided by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) between October 8 and 9, 2016, for alleged corruption.

The Justice in his letter asserted that his recent arrest by DSS operatives was orchestrated by the Federal Government to humiliate him because he declined the offer made to him by the former governor of Rivers State, now Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, to influence the Supreme Court judgments in the appeals involving the governorship elections in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Abia States in the 2015 general elections.

Nigerians have therefore questioned the effectiveness of the Rule of Law as enshrined in our constitution; a basic and dynamic legal concept that simply recognise the “supremacy of law”.  Nigerians want the DSS to also investigate if actually Amaechi offered Justice Okoro bribe.
