Singer Naira Marley has said that his mum is the reason why he decided to call off the EndSARS protest he had planned for last Tuesday.
The singer had urged Nigerians to join him in a protest against the brutality of operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.
However, hours to the beginning of the protest, Naira Marley tweeted to call it off. He then opted to dialogue with the Nigeria Police Force on how police brutality will be stopped in Nigeria.
This didn’t go without a backlash from Nigerians who dragged him on the social media, especially after his fellow celebrities stormed the streets to lead protests against SARS.
Speaking in a video, Naira Marley advised people on social media to stop forcing others to join the protest.
“Stop telling people what to do. Let them use their own mind so that if anything should happen at the protest, they will blame themselves not you,” he said.
The singer then went on to reveal why he called off the protest he had called for.
He said:
“Do you know why I kept my own prostet on pause? As I tweeted that I was going to protest, my mum called me.”
Speaking in Yoruba, Naira Marley said that his mother warned him about the dangers of protesting.
According to him, his mother asked him to identify the person that will be blamed if the peaceful protest he wanted to lead turned violent and people are killed.
Speaking further, the singer said that there’s a probability that a protest against SARS who are already killing innocent people will lead to more killings.
He concluded by asking if people will start calling for the scrapping of police if people are killed by police during the EndSARS protests.
