Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has revealed a personal appeal made to him by former President Muhammadu Buhari during their meeting in the lead-up to the polls.
Obi, who visited the Buhari family in Daura on Wednesday to offer his condolences, recounted the late president’s words during their encounter.
“I had the opportunity of meeting him while I was campaigning, and I remember his words to this day: ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians’. That’s what I always remember. And I believe he did his best within his capacity. I remember vividly his sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor,” Obi said.
Reflecting on the legacy of the late president, the former Anambra State governor said the advice had stayed with him, shaping his view on leadership and service.
“We all have to learn how to serve our country, knowing that one day we will be called back by our creator,” he added.
Obi also addressed his absence at Buhari’s burial on Tuesday, attributing it to logistical setbacks caused by airspace closures.
“Yes, it was difficult to come here yesterday because there were no flights. Even if you had a flight, you couldn’t land at Katsina Airport. It was all closed because of the number of dignitaries attending the burial,” he explained.
He noted that paying respects is not limited to the day of burial.
“It is believed that the mourning continues today and tomorrow. Whoever comes today or tomorrow is still part of the mourning,” Obi said.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 81, was buried on Tuesday in his hometown, Daura, with full military honors. The funeral drew the presence of President Bola Tinubu, top government officials, traditional rulers, and foreign dignitaries. Airspace restrictions were imposed to accommodate the high-profile attendees, affecting travel for several mourners, including Obi.
