Werner, Mount fire Chelsea to Champions League final
Chelsea have booked their place in the final of the 2020/21 Champions League season after defeating Real Madrid 2-0 in the second leg on Wednesday night.
The Blues came into the game with an away goal advantage having played a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium in Spain last Tuesday.
Zinedine Zidane’s side started the return leg on a strong foot but Chelsea’s Mendy was up to the task, denying the visitors some chances in the first half.
The Blues broke the deadlock in the 28th minute after a brilliant move from Ngolo kante who opened up the Madrid defence before slotting the pass to Kai Havertz whose effort nicked the woodwork leading to Timo Werner heading into an open net.
Chelsea were the stronger side coming into the second half and Thomas Tuchel’s side had about four opportunities to kill off the game in the second half but were wasteful in the front of goal.
But as the game entered the final five minutes of regular time, Chelsea finished off with a second goal through Mason Mount.
Kante was again at work as he stole the ball in the Madrid half, leaving them with a three-to-two defenders situation. The diminutive midfielder found Christian Pulisc who teed up Mount for the winner.
Chelsea finished the game 3-1 on aggregate.
They will be heading to Istanbul for an all-English Champions League final against Manchester City who defeated last season’s finalist, Paris Saint-Germain.
